Adoptive Families magazine published an article entitled, “Talking With Children About Adoption,” written by Barbara Russell. In the article, she outlines 9 important points to consider when talking to your adoptee about adoption. Number 7 on the list really stands out for folks touched by international adoption: “Make certain children who are older when placed – especially international adoptees – receive the explanations and support they need,” it reads.

This is but one aspect of the unique sensitivity and consideration that’s a part of international adoption. In an effort to provide comprehensive resources and support in this vein, Adoption STAR always offers several international adoption-specific pieces of programming each year.

Please consider joining us for a “Supporting Your Internationally Adopted Child Through the Years,” on Tuesday, February 16th from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at Adoption STAR’s main office (131 John Muir Drive, Amherst, NY 14228). The event will be facilitated by Meg Montgomery, LMSW (Adoption STAR’s International Adoption Coordinator) and a variety of panel members including adoptive parents (Jen Huber, Linda Groat) and an adoptee (Maribeth Duncan). The discussion will focus on ways to best support international adoptees as they face challenges, hit developmental milestones, discover their identity, and connect with their birth culture. Prospective adoptive parents who are clients of Adoption STAR are eligible to receive 5 credits toward their educational requirement if they attend. Clients that have already adopted internationally are welcome to attend, as are non-clients that are connected to international adoption in some way, shape or form.

To RSVP for the event, please call us at 716-639-3900 or e-mail us at info@adoptionstar.com.
