Making Connections

Family STAR is forming a brand new support group for adoptive parents, and the inaugural meeting is happening next month!

When I began my job as Family STAR Coordinator, I asked many Adoption STAR families about their post adoption needs and/or wishes. One of the wishes mentioned over and over again was to have a support group for parents who have adopted. One woman told me, “I felt different from all my friends who gave birth to their children because I was trying to figure out how adoption fit into our lives as a new family.” Another woman said that she was tired of trying to explain open adoption to everyone. She just wanted to be able to talk to people who had some perspective on adoption in general.

After being in my position at Family STAR for over a year now, I have heard similar thoughts echoed from many other families. In addition, I have attended other adoptive parent support groups in the community to see how these groups have helped other families. It is from these conversations and experiences that the adoptive parent support group called “Making Connections” has been formed. This group is designed for families to derive support from each other and learn from each other. It is open to anyone in the community who has adopted a child. We meet the first Thursday of every month and our first meeting is May 7th from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at Adoption STAR. Please consider coming to this meeting (and/or future meetings). We would love to see you!
