The Adoptive Parents Committee and Their Exemplary Commitment to Adoption Education

Post Date: November 10th, 2011

The Adoptive Parents Committee (APC) is a non-profit parent support group comprised of volunteers dedicated to improving all aspects of adoption and interim (foster) care. APC, the oldest adoptive parent group in North America, was formed in 1955 by a small group of people who shared their adoptive experiences. Today, there are more than 1,500 member families who belong to one of APC’s four chapters: Long Island, New York City, New Jersey and the Connecticut/Hudson Region. Some of our members are from Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania and other states throughout the country.

APC is an advocate for humanitarian improvements in the adoption and foster care system.  The APC’s goal is to Let Every Child Eligible For Adoption Become Available for Adoption. APC is also committed to educating the public, the media and its members about current adoption issues.

The Board of Governors of APC publishes ADOPTALK, a monthly newsletter. They also maintain an active Resources Committee which researches and monitors adoption throughout the world. The Legal Advisory Committee assists members and legislators on matters of foster care and adoption. The Adoption Awareness and Education Committee acts as a resource to the adoption community.

Local chapters hold monthly meetings which feature guest speakers, panels and discussion groups to inform the membership about parenting and adoption concerns. Pre-and-post-adoption workshops are available to members. Each chapter has a bookstore that carries an array of books and other materials covering topics on adoption and parenting. Family events, including a picnic and holiday party, are held throughout the year.

Each year APC puts on a daylong adoption conference during November, National Adoption Month.  This year it will be held on Sunday, November 20 and will mark the 31st conference.  Held at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, the conference serves to promote a better awareness and understanding of adoption and provide attendees with accurate information concerning adoption and parenting issues.  Over 500 attendees are expected.

Conference participants have the opportunity to choose from over 85 workshops, seminars, lectures and panel discussions.  Led by professionals and experts in the adoption field including attorneys, social workers, physicians, adoptive parents, agency representatives, adoptees and educators, the workshops provide up-to-date information as well as a forum for discussions.

Adoption STAR enjoys attending this annual conference.  “I genuinely enjoy interacting with our professional peers, facilitating workshops and speaking to the conference attendees.  It genuinely is a comprehensive and very worthwhile conference,” states Michele Fried, founder and CEO of Adoption STAR

The APC conference is for those who are considering adoption as a way to build their family, those who have already adopted and for those professionals and advocates who are involved in the adoption and foster care fields.
