Adoption STAR’s International Adoption Coordinator Meg Montgomery recently alerted us to a webinar that we wanted to share with all of you.

The webinar is entitled, “Adoptive Fathers: Empowering the Male Voice.” It features Guest Speaker Dr. David Brodzinsky, a respected clinician, researcher, author, adoption expect and Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University. It’s being held live on Thursday, June 16th from 7pm to 8:30pm (with options for non-live viewing from June 17th through July 16th).

Here’s a brief synopsis of the webinar that accompanies the publicity for the event itself:

“In heterosexual families, parents often report that conversations about adoption generally happen between the children/teens and their mothers. Frequently, mothers tend to be the parent that initiates those talks and engages in ‘deeper’ discussions with their children.

In this webinar, Dr. Brodzinsky will explore the experience of fatherhood and the unique adoption-related parenting tasks that adoptive dads face. Joined by a diverse panel of adoptive fathers, Dr. Brodzinsky will discuss how a child’s relationship with their father, their self-esteem and well-being is affected by their dad’s involvement in helping them process their adoption stories. Challenges faced by gay/single fathers will be addressed as well as how children are impacted by the absence of their birth fathers.
