How to Get New York Original Birth Certificate as an Adoptee

It’s finally here – a major victory for New York and for adoptees!

After years of frustration dealing with sealed adoption records, adoptees have won!

Effective January 15, 2020, all New York adoptees have the ability to request their original, pre-adoption birth certificate – no restrictions or strings attached. Your records are no longer sealed.

This new law also allows adoptee’s descendants the power to request their family member’s original birth certificates, as well.

And, what’s more, if you’re born in New York but adopted out of state, you can still request to view the information that would appear on the original birth certificate.

We are thrilled about this new legislature and believe that the ability for adoptees to gain insight and access to their past is an undeniable right.

This unlocked access to original birth certificates will hopefully provide some much needed clarity to adoptees, and will help those searching for birth families the information they need to find answers.
